Mosquito Surveys & Risk Assessment

Understand the area, the mosquito population and the decisions your programme needs to support before specifying control activity.

Define the survey question

An initial assessment establishes the site boundary, land use, topography, water management, existing controls and the people or activities affected. The scope can cover a municipal area, a public-space portfolio, a development or a hospitality estate. Agree access, season, available records and the decisions the findings will inform.

Connect habitats, species and exposure

Review potential breeding sources alongside adult mosquito surveillance, specimen identification and the location and timing of complaints. Irrigation, drainage, water storage, construction and maintenance responsibilities are considered together. A complaint record is useful evidence of nuisance; it does not by itself establish mosquito abundance or disease transmission.

Separate nuisance from health risk

Risk assessment distinguishes observed activity, potential exposure and the evidence available about species and pathogens. Where laboratory investigation is justified, define a separate testing brief with the receiving laboratory. Neither the presence of a potential vector species nor a positive molecular result alone proves local transmission.

What the client receives

The agreed deliverables can include a site assessment, mapped inspection findings, evidence gaps, prioritised risks, a surveillance brief and recommendations for programme design. Records distinguish confirmed observations from assumptions and matters requiring investigation. Findings include the limits of the sampling period and coverage.

Prepare for the assessment

Provide a site plan, inspection access, current service specifications, surveillance and treatment records, complaint information and relevant maintenance plans. We agree the scope, reporting format, laboratory options and timetable before work starts. Repeat sampling and follow-up visits are specified where needed rather than implied in a one-off survey.
